Great Fabric, What to Make?

I’ve been asked so many times to suggest quilt patterns for specific fabrics. We all have that special fabric that we bought ‘cuz we love it, and it’s been sitting there waiting for a project. I’ve been asked to show how I come up with an idea for a quilt, how to plan it out and to choose fabrics to go with it.

Shadow Boxes

This is an “oldie but goodie”. The pattern has been around for a while, but it’s very “fat quarter friendly”, especially if you’ve bought a fat quarter “bundle” of co-ordinated fabrics (which is what I used), and then two colours that go with your fat quarter colours, one light and one dark.

The quilt in the upper right is laid out in the Scattered Geese design. The blocks finish at 6″ square. This pattern provides all the papers necessary to complete the 40 blocks required to make the cover quilts, which are laid out in a 5 block by 8 block arrangement and is a great beginner pattern for those new to foundation piecing. What’s in a Pin-Wheel?

What you see isn’t always what you get! This is a fun block for which I was told there were four different designs you could make out of a pin-wheel, but I fiddled around and got six…can you get more? You only need two fabrics for this one, and the size is up to you, as is the number of blocks you want to make. I would suggest to make six pin-wheels at home, and bring them to class and we can play together! The size of your original block doesn’t matter, it’s your choice, because there is a “formula” for cutting it up, and you can use it with any size block

Oh So Bright!

Oh So Bright!!: The Quilt finishes at 74″ x 86″. You can pull all the fabrics from your stash or use three-jelly rolls, one light and two dark. Your fabric should be lights and darks. There should be a definite division of colour depth; blendy-blendy mediums that can go either way should not be used. I used a light for my background with very bright colours for my other pieces. If you wish to use a dark for your background and lights for your other pieces you will need scraps to reflect that and if you wish to use jelly rolls you would use one dark and two lights. You will need border fabric once you have your centre quilt done. Leave that choice until the end. You will need an easy angle ruler to make this quilt.
